Wat zijn de beste albums uit 1981?
In januari komt de vijfde plaats van Elvis Costello and the Attractions, getiteld Trust, uit. De LP is weer van hoog niveau. Face Value, het eerste solo-album van de drummer van Genesis, Phil Collins, komt in februari uit. In the Air Tonight, het eerste nummer, wordt een grote hit. Het album krijgt goede kritieken en verkoopt zeer goed. Funk muzikant Rick James brengt met Street Songs zijn ultieme meesterwerk uit. New Wave groep Squeeze brengen met East Side Story een briljant vierde album uit. De productie is grotendeels van Elvis Costello. De groep waarvan de invloed heden ten dage nog steeds zeer merkbaar is in de elektronische muziek en dance, Kraftwerk, brengt met Computer World een nieuw album uit. Na Sinsemilla in 1980, brengt de reggae groep Black Uhuru met Red weer een zeer goede plaat uit. Stevie Nicks, zangeres van Fleetwood Mac komt met haar eerste solo-album, Bella Donna. De Britse funk groep Level 42 met de virtuoze bassist Mark King verrast met het gelijknamige debuutalbum. Het meest opvallende soul debuutalbum uit 1981 is ongetwijfeld Never Too Much van Luther Vandross. Het 33e album van countryzanger Merle Haggard,B ig City, is een van de allerbeste die hij gemaakt heeft. De Australische actrice en zangeres Olivia Newton-John heeft met het dance-pop album Physical een groot verkoopsucces en de gelijknamige single bereikt in veel landen de eerste plaats van de hitlijst. Eind november komt The Visitors van ABBA uit. Het zal het laatste album blijken te zijn van de Zweedse popgroep. Het is het de eerste popplaat in de geschiedenis die ook op CD wordt uitgebracht. Er was al wel eerder klassieke muziek op CD verkrijgbaar.
